Marlins win dozens of awards at Olympics

McKenna Marlins swimmers won 32 medals and ribbons at the South Texas Junior Olympics held at Palo Alto Natatorium in San Antonio last weekend.

In the competition that featured teams from throughout Central and South Texas, 10-year-old Ashley Frazier was the Marlins’ top medalist and placed in seven events in the 9-10 girls division. Frazier won the 100 backstroke, took second in the 100 freestyle and 200 medley relay and placed third in the 50 free, 50 back and 200 free relays.

In the 15-18 boys division, Donald Konomos took third in the 100 free (1:04.21) and was eighth in the 200 and 400 freestyles. Jacob Glasby, in the boys 11-12 division, was third in the 50 back and also placed in the 100 back and 50 free.

Thomas Oliver Parrott was seventh in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 breaststroke; Arthur Frazier, in the 8-under division, was eighth in the 50 back and 50 breast and Sean Garrett was fifth in the boys 13-14 division 50 free.

The Marlins relay teams also had a stellar weekend. In the 10-under 200 free, Ashley Frazier, Madeleine Moss, Allie Pencsak and Lauren Kenney took second; The 200 medley relay “A” team of Moss, Frazier, Kenney and Cassidy Riccio was third and the “B” team of Peighton Starch, Tori Pencsak, Allie Pencsak and Jennifer Mendez finished eighth. The 11-12 boys team of Jacob Glasby, Joshua VanLaar, Oliver Parrott and Owen Garrett was first in the 200 free and second in the 200 medley.

Other Marlins competing last weekend were Jordan Goebel, Mia Hofstad, Ashley Orr, Jennifer Renick, Destiny Riccio, Van Anderson, Cody House, Sean Konomos, Sam Simmons and James Westbrook.

In early July, Madeleine Moss and Allie Pencsak placed at the Texas Open held at the Texas Swim Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

Competing in the 8-under division, Moss finished sixth in the 50 back and Pencsak was seventh in both the 50 butterfly and 50 back. Other Marlins competing were Ashley Frazier, Jennifer Renick, Kyle Dwyer, Donald Konomos and Van Anderson.
